silver pill box - Italy
this is a silver pill box of fluted oval shape. It has a loose lid decorated with initials "FF".
The maker silversmith is Gioielleria Galbiati, Via Tibaldi 30, Milano (Italy).Silver pieces retailed by Tiffany & Co were manufactured by Gioielleria Galbiati and bear its 174MI mark aside TIFFANY & CO / STERLING.
The Gioielleria Galbiati was founded in 1909 and is listed on the Elenco dei Negozi Storici of Milan (Directory of Historical Workshops of Milan).
The pill box bears on the bottom the marks:
- maker's mark (a bee inside a circle with a "G" at both sides);
- 800 (silver fineness 800/1000);
- GALBIATI MILANO;
- another rubbed mark (possibly 174MI inside a lozenge).
The pill box measures 2 x 1 1/2 in (cm. 5 x 3 1/2) and was bought from an Italian dealer in an antique market.
