silver ember bowl (chofeta, brasero) - Spain
This is a silver ember bowl with an embossed cup standing on three paw feet.
It has two wood handles and Spanish hallmark of 18th century (presumably Cordoba) and silversmith's hallmark F over xxRIA.
Bowls were used by smokers to light their pipes and cigars from hot embers placed on the table without
burning it.
These devices were called "pipe lighters" or "smoker's brazier" and in Spanish "chofeta" and "brasero"
(braserillo).
The ember bowl is 8 3/4 in. wide (cm 22,5 with the handles) and was bought from a Italian dealer in an
Antique Market.
