Gorham silver shaving and vanity travel set - USAthis is a travel sterling silver shaving and vanity set engraved on the reserve G.W.B. The set consists of: - a Gillette safety razor with blade storage on the handle, marked GORHAM STERLING 76 A 8. The razor is gold plated and marked with Gillette logo and "Made in U.S.A". - soft bristle brush in sterling cylindrical case, marked with Gorham symbol (anchor, lion, gothic letter G), STERLING 60 A 8, - tooth brush holder shaped like a rural mailbox, marked GORHAM, symbol as above, STERLING, 74 A 8 - nail file, marked with symbol, STERLING, 62 A 8. All pieces are decorated with guilloché bands in art deco taste with monogram G.W.B. engraved on the reserve. The Gorham mark has no date letter or symbol so that these pieces were presumably made in the 1930s, when Gorham omitted to use year marks. A razor of quite similar shape, but with different geometrical decoration, was manufactured also by Wm. B. Kerr & Co, a firm purchased in 1906 by Gorham Corporation that moved to Providence, Rhode Island in 1927. This set was the subject matter of a wider article I wrote for Silver Magazine and published on July/August 2008 edition. The shaving set was bought from an USA dealer through the Internet. |
