MARKS - HALLMARKS - HISTORY
William Lister (1776-1868) active as silversmith (1820) at 33 Mosley Street, Newcastle, was succeeded by Lister & Son (William Lister I & Clement Lister: 1838), Lister & Sons (William Lister I, Clement Lister & William Lister II: 1840) and Lister & Sons Ltd (1916).
They were known as Goldsmiths, Jewellers, Watch and Clock makers, Dealers in Antique silver and in 1863 they advertised also as Electro-Plated Manufacturers, forks, spoons in plain and ornamental patterns.
In 1931 Lister & Sons Ltd amalgamated with Grant & Son and Gowland & Grant (the Gowlands were related to Listers).
Active at various addresses in Newcastle on Tyne: St. Thomas's Place, 9 Grey Street (until 1913), 32/34 Northumberland Street (from 1913) with "manufactory" at 16/17 Mosley Street.
Lister & Sons were represented at 1851 London Great Exhibition and at 1862 International Exhibition. Silver hallmarks were registered at Newcastle (1821), Sheffield (1895), Birmingham (1932), London (1851, 1895) and Chester (1929) Assay Offices.
