DERBY SILVER CO - Derby (Birmingham) CT The company was founded in 1873 by Edward N. Shelton, Watson J. Miller, and Thomas H. Newcomb. The main offices of the company were in the Birmingham section of Derby while the factory was in Shelton. The firm manufactured a line of silverplated toiletware and plated holloware under the trademarks Victor Silver Co and Victor Silver Plate Co. Showrooms were established in New York City, Chicago, and San Francisco. Derby Silver Co was one of the original firms forming International Silver Co in 1898 and the Shelton factory became known as "Factory B".
It was consolidated into Meriden in 1933. For a short period (1888-1895) the firm manufactured sterling silver flatware and holloware under the trade mark M&B (Watson J. Miller and Henry Berry). |

WILLIAM WALDO DODGE Jr. - Asheville, NC William Waldo Dodge (1895-1971) was an architect and silversmith. In 1924 he opened a small silversmith shop where he produced handwrought Arts & Crafts sterling flatware and holloware under the shopmark ASHEVILLE SILVERCRAFT and, from 1928, under the shopmark DODGE/BY HAND. The assistants of Dodge were Dick Shuford, Ray Yeomans and Johnny Green (a special code on the mark identrified the maker of any piece: see the table of codes). The shop was closed in 1942 due to the outbreak of World War II and the subsequent enlistment of the assistants. |
